BENGALURU: The Karnataka government is considering a proposal to introduce a separate sub-quota for students from rural government schools seeking admission to professional courses, including NEET and CET-based programmes.
The proposed move aims to provide additional opportunities to students from rural and government school backgrounds who often face challenges in accessing competitive exam preparation resources.
Officials said the initiative is being examined within the existing rural reservation framework and is intended to improve representation of students from underserved areas in medical and other professional education streams.
The proposal has triggered discussions among education stakeholders, with supporters highlighting the need for greater equity in admissions, while others emphasise maintaining transparency and merit-based selection.
If approved, the policy could become a significant step towards reducing educational disparities between urban and rural students in Karnataka.
