Srinagar, May 6: Jammu and Kashmir Pradesh Congress Committee President Tariq Hameed Karra has cautioned against the grave and far-reaching consequences of war, stating that although conflict carries long-term implications, the Congress Party stands united with the government on any firm and decisive measures it deems necessary in response to the recent terror attack in Pahalgam.
Speaking to reporters amid heightened tensions with Pakistan following the April 22 terrorist assault in the picturesque Baisaran area—which claimed the lives of 26 civilians—Karra emphasized the party’s support for national security decisions, provided they are in the country’s best interest. “War is not a light word. It is dangerous and carries long-term consequences. However, given the current situation and the government’s intent to act decisively against terrorism, the Congress stands behind them in whatever steps they choose to take for the safety and sovereignty of the nation,” Karra remarked.
His statement came as the Centre issued directives to several states to conduct coordinated Civil Defence mock drills on May 7, signaling serious concern over possible escalations and a tightening of internal security frameworks.
Addressing queries about ongoing anti-terror operations in the Kashmir Valley—including the detention of suspects and the demolition of properties allegedly linked to terror networks—Karra urged the administration to adopt a measured and responsible approach. “We understand that the government must do what is necessary to root out terrorism. But we have also advised caution. It is imperative that innocent people are not caught in the crossfire or subjected to undue hardship. Justice must be swift but never blind,” he said, calling for balance between security imperatives and human rights.
On a separate issue, Karra welcomed the Union Cabinet’s nod for conducting a caste-based census in the country, calling it a vindication of the Congress Party’s persistent efforts. He credited Rahul Gandhi’s steadfast campaign for pushing the government to acknowledge the need for such enumeration. “The cabinet’s approval of the caste census is a moment of pride for the Congress Party. It is a direct result of Rahul Gandhi’s relentless advocacy. This will serve as an important step towards social equity and better-targeted welfare policies,” he stated.
