Karur Stampede Case: Vijay Expected Before CBI Again Today

TVK leader summoned again as CBI intensifies investigation into deadly rally stampede that killed 41

Tamil Nadu, Jan 19 : Tamilaga Vettri Kazhagam (TVK) leader Vijay is likely to appear before the Central Bureau of Investigation (CBI) in New Delhi on Monday for a second round of questioning in connection with the Karur stampede case, sources said. The agency had earlier questioned him for several hours on January 12.

With the Tamil Nadu Assembly elections approaching, the CBI has stepped up its investigation into the tragedy.

41 Killed in Stampede at Vijay’s Rally

At least 41 people were killed and several others injured after a stampede broke out during Vijay’s rally in Karur on September 27, 2025.

Following the incident, the Tamil Nadu Police alleged that the TVK leadership had ignored official advice and failed to put adequate crowd-control measures in place. The state government subsequently set up a one-member commission to probe the incident.

Vijay, however, alleged a conspiracy against him and demanded an independent investigation. TVK later approached the Supreme Court, seeking a CBI probe.

Supreme Court Handed Probe to CBI

In October last year, the Supreme Court transferred the investigation to the CBI and constituted an oversight committee headed by former Supreme Court judge Justice Ajay Rastogi to ensure a fair and impartial probe into the stampede.

What CBI Asked Vijay in First Round

According to reports, CBI officials questioned Vijay extensively during the first round of interrogation, focusing on whether he had prior knowledge of the arrangements, the crowd-control measures taken by organisers, and whether the local administration had issued advance warnings.

Investigators also asked when Vijay first became aware of the severity of the crowd situation. Although he reportedly answered all questions, officials were not fully satisfied, prompting the agency to summon him again.
