Karur, Tamil Nadu – The death toll from the Karur stampede at Tamilaga Vettri Kazhagam (TVK) leader and actor Vijay’s campaign rally has climbed to 41, after a 65 year old woman undergoing treatment succumbed to her injuries on Monday.
The victim, identified as Suguna of Karur district, had been on ventilator support in the ICU but failed to respond to treatment. Among the deceased are 18 women, 13 men, five young girls, and five young boys. Of the total, 34 victims belong to Karur, while others hail from Erode, Tiruppur, Dindigul, and Salem districts.
The tragedy unfolded on Saturday evening when an overcrowded rally venue turned chaotic, triggering panic and a deadly crush. Several attendees fainted and were rushed to nearby hospitals for treatment.
Reacting to the incident, TVK chief Vijay expressed deep sorrow, announcing ₹20 lakh financial assistance for each bereaved family and ₹2 lakh for the injured. Prime Minister Narendra Modi also extended support, sanctioning ₹2 lakh compensation from the PM’s National Relief Fund for the next of kin of each deceased, and ₹50,000 for the injured.
Meanwhile, Tamil Nadu Chief Minister M.K. Stalin has announced ₹10 lakh ex gratia for each family of the victims and ₹1 lakh for those injured.
Authorities have assured a judicial inquiry into the incident, as demands for accountability and stricter crowd-management measures continue to grow.
