Kashmir Braces for Wintry Turn as Clear Skies Yield to Forecasted Snowfall and Rain from February 17

Srinagar, 15-02-2024 : As Kashmiris enjoy the clear skies and bright sunshine, they are also preparing for an impending weather change. Despite the pleasant weather observed on Thursday, the Kashmir valley is bracing itself for a spell of moderate to heavy snowfall, forecasted to commence from February 17 and persist until February 21. The Meteorological (MeT) department has issued warnings about this anticipated snowfall, which is expected to blanket the region in white. Additionally, rain is anticipated in the plains, while the higher reaches of the Jammu division are likely to experience snow during this period.

Temperatures across various parts of Kashmir and its surrounding regions reflect the winter chill. In Srinagar, the mercury dipped to minus 3 degrees Celsius, while in popular destinations like Gulmarg and Pahalgam, it plummeted further to minus 3.2 and minus 5.4 degrees Celsius, respectively. Meanwhile, in the mountainous terrains of Ladakh, Leh witnessed frigid temperatures with the mercury plummeting to minus 12.1 degrees Celsius, while Kargil recorded a minimum of minus 11.6 degrees Celsius.

In contrast, the plains of Jammu division registered relatively milder temperatures. Jammu city saw the mercury hover around 8.2 degrees Celsius, while Katra and Batote recorded temperatures of 8.4 and 6.1 degrees Celsius, respectively. Cooler temperatures were noted in Bhaderwah and Banihal, where the minimum temperatures were 2 and 6.8 degrees Celsius, respectively.
