Srinagar, 02-02-2024: For the second consecutive day on Friday, the Kashmir Valley found itself isolated from the rest of the country as surface transport remained disrupted. The closure of the Srinagar-Jammu National Highway, coupled with snowfall and incidents of stone-pelting at multiple locations, contributed to this ongoing transportation challenge.
Efforts are underway for the restoration of connectivity at key locations such as Kishtwari Pather, Sherbibi, Magerkote, Mehad-Cafeteria, and Dalwas, as reported by a traffic official. However, the road conditions are challenging, with slipperiness reported at several points along the national highway.
The advisory from authorities urges people to refrain from embarking on journeys along the highway until the road is deemed clear and safe. The closure of the historical Mughal road, which links south Kashmir’s Shopian district with the twin districts of Rajouri and Poonch in Jammu division, adds to the transportation woes. Additionally, the strategic Srinagar-Sonamarg-Gumri (SSG) road, crucial for connecting Ladakh, has also been impassable for the past three days due to significant snow accumulation.
In northern Kashmir, several roads connecting far-flung areas have been closed due to snowfall, leading to further isolation. However, authorities have initiated snow clearance operations at various locations to make these roads traffic-worthy, signaling ongoing efforts to alleviate the impact of adverse weather conditions on transportation in the region. Travelers and residents are advised to stay informed about the current road conditions and exercise caution until normalcy is restored.
