Srinagar, 20-12-2023 : As the Kashmir Valley prepares to confront the onset of its most severe winter phase known as ‘Chilla-i-Kalan,’ officials reported that the minimum temperatures in the region have plummeted several degrees below freezing. Srinagar, the summer capital of Jammu and Kashmir, experienced a bone-chilling low of minus 4.4 degrees Celsius on a recent night, indicating the intensifying cold wave gripping the valley.
Other prominent locations in the region also recorded frigid temperatures, with Pahalgam in south Kashmir registering a minimum of minus 6.3 degrees Celsius and the renowned ski resort of Gulmarg in Baramulla district recording minus 4.4 degrees Celsius. Qazigund, Kokernag, and Kupwara also witnessed sub-zero temperatures, with the weather office forecasting generally dry conditions in the coming days as the minimum temperature is anticipated to decline further.
The drop in temperature has triggered the freezing of numerous slow-moving water bodies and water supply pipes in certain areas. In light of erratic electricity supply in many parts of Kashmir, residents have turned to traditional methods, such as using ‘kangri’—an earthen firepot—to combat the piercing cold.
However, the dip in temperature has brought about health concerns, particularly among children and the elderly, leading to an upsurge in respiratory problems. The ‘Chilla-i-Kalan,’ spanning 40 days, marks the harshest winter period in Kashmir, characterized by a severe cold wave and a significant drop in temperature. During this phase, water bodies, including the iconic Dal Lake, freeze, and water supply lines in various parts of the valley are impacted.
This harsh period is also synonymous with frequent and substantial snowfall, especially in higher-altitude regions. ‘Chillai-Kalan’ officially commences on December 21 and concludes on January 31, followed by an extended cold wave with ‘Chillai-Khurd’ (small cold) lasting for 20 days and ‘Chillai-Bachha’ (baby cold) persisting for 10 days in Kashmir. The community is gearing up for the challenges posed by this prolonged and intense winter, taking precautions to navigate the freezing temperatures and potential snowfall during this extended period.
