29-04-2023 : On Saturday, Delhi Chief Minister Arvind Kejriwal visited the protestors at Jantar Mantar and voiced his support for them. Kejriwal urged people to put aside their political affiliations and extend support to the wrestlers, saying that they were fighting for the entire sports fraternity. He also accused the Centre of shielding Singh and demanded that those who harass women be given capital punishment.
Kejriwal’s visit comes after Delhi Cabinet ministers Atishi and Saurabh Bharadwaj, and AAP spokesperson Reena Gupta visited the protestors on Friday. The support for the wrestlers has been growing, with legendary Indian footballer adding his voice to those who have extended their support for the protesting athletes.
The protests have resulted in two FIRs being filed against Singh by the Delhi Police on allegations of sexual harassment levelled by seven women wrestlers. The protestors have been demanding that Singh be removed from his position and that the WFI be restructured.
The matter highlights the need for a safe and secure environment for women in sports and the importance of addressing issues related to sexual harassment in sports. It also underscores the power of collective action and the role of athletes in advocating for change in sports.
