Kulgam, Jun 22: Security forces in Kulgam district have launched an extensive preventive security drive as part of preparations for the upcoming Shri Amarnath Ji Yatra (SANJY-2026), conducting coordinated search operations across multiple vulnerable zones on Sunday.
The large scale exercise covered higher reaches, dense forest stretches, orchards, plant nurseries, and other remote areas identified as sensitive from a security standpoint. Officials said the initiative aims to strengthen ground-level surveillance and ensure a safe environment for the annual pilgrimage.
According to officials, the operation was carried out jointly by police and other security agencies following detailed threat assessments. The focus remained on identifying and neutralising any potential risks that could disrupt peaceful conduct of the Yatra.
Security personnel undertook intensive area domination and combing drills in difficult terrains and less accessible locations. Routes often used for movement through forest belts and high-altitude zones were thoroughly inspected as part of the preventive strategy.
During the course of the operation, several individuals suspected of acting as Over Ground Workers (OGWs) and allegedly providing logistical assistance to militant networks were detained for questioning. Investigations into their activities and possible linkages are currently underway.
Senior officials stated that these measures form part of a broader security framework designed to safeguard pilgrims, residents, and infrastructure associated with SANJY-2026. They added that surveillance and search operations will continue in the coming days to maintain a strong security posture across the district.
Authorities further confirmed that security arrangements across the Kashmir region have been reinforced ahead of the Yatra, with special attention to transit routes, base camps, and adjoining vulnerable pockets.
Meanwhile, locals have been urged to extend cooperation to security agencies and immediately report any suspicious movement to the nearest police establishment, helping ensure a peaceful and incident-free pilgrimage season.
Officials reiterated that maintaining peace and stability remains the top priority as preparations for SANJY-2026 move into the final phase.
