India, May 06 : The Los Angeles Lakers faced a difficult night both on the scoreboard and in terms of player fitness after forward Jarred Vanderbilt suffered a painful finger injury during Game 1 of the Western Conference semifinal series against the Oklahoma City Thunder on Tuesday night.
The incident occurred midway through the second quarter when Vanderbilt attempted to block a dunk by Thunder center Chet Holmgren from behind. While trying to contest the play, Vanderbilt’s right pinkie struck the backboard awkwardly as Holmgren completed the dunk successfully.
The impact immediately drew concern inside the arena. Several players on the Thunder bench reportedly looked away after witnessing the injury, highlighting the seriousness of the moment. Holmgren’s basket pushed Oklahoma City’s advantage to 48-39 with 5:57 left before halftime.
Vanderbilt was seen bending over in visible pain while holding his hand moments after the collision. Medical staff quickly attended to him before he walked off the court and headed to the locker room for further evaluation. He did not return to the contest.
Speaking after the game, Lakers head coach JJ Redick described the injury as unfortunate and concerning.
“I went to go check on him because it just looked bad. He was audibly screaming. Knew he had done something. We’re obviously disappointed. But, that happened, and it’s just a freak injury,” Redick said.
The injury created another challenge for Los Angeles, which was already battling one of the league’s top-performing teams in the postseason. Vanderbilt’s exit shortened the Lakers’ active rotation from nine players to eight, limiting the team’s defensive flexibility and energy off the bench.
Before leaving the floor, Vanderbilt logged six minutes and contributed two points. Although his statistical impact was limited, his defensive intensity and hustle are considered valuable elements in the Lakers’ playoff system.
Meanwhile, Oklahoma City continued to capitalize on the momentum. Led by an aggressive offensive performance and strong defensive execution, the Thunder carried a 61-53 lead into halftime before dominating the second half on the way to a convincing 108-90 victory.
The result gave Oklahoma City a 1-0 advantage in the best-of-seven Western Conference semifinal series while raising concerns over Vanderbilt’s availability moving forward. The Lakers are expected to provide an official medical update after further examination of the injured finger.
With the playoffs entering a crucial phase, Los Angeles will hope the injury is not serious enough to sideline one of their key defensive contributors for an extended period.
