LG must honour the words of Amit Shah by exempting small land holders in eviction drive: Rattan Lal

JAMMU: J&K National Conference today asked the Lt Governor to honuor the words of Union Home Minister by exempting the people who are eking out their livelihood and are dependent on these five to 15 marlas of State, irrigation, forest or Kacharai land should not be touched during the ongoing eviction drive.

In a statement issued here today, Rattan Lal Gupta took serious note of the notices served to the shopkeepers and residential houses in Nai Basti area of Jammu in view of ongoing eviction drive. He said these people are residing in Nai Basti area for the last more than 50 years and paying their due rent to the concerned government department from time to time. He anguished over the move of government to forcibly dislocate a large section of people settled in several part of the state by issuing a gagging order in the name of encroachments.

Rattan Lal said that the continuation of eviction drive will only lead to creating an atmosphere of chaos and confusion across Jammu and Kashmir.  The people in possession of the said land did not occupy it forcibly but the same stands duly allotted to them under the law namely Roshni Act duly passed by the legislature of Jammu and Kashmir. Moreover, these people got the rights of land under the Roshni Act by paying their lifelong earnings for getting the land registered in their name followed by further spending on construction of dwellings to live in,” he added.

The senior NC leader said the State land being possessed by the poor and economically weaker sections of the society are mainly using it for agricultural purposes or at the most for meager shelter and running their small shops to earn bread and butter for their family. He said that the protection and welfare of such people is the prime duty of the Govt and as such dislodging such people from the State land would amount to gross injustice to them.

Rattan Lal appealed to the Lt Governor Manoj Sinha to honour the assurance given by the Union Home Minister that small land holders / residential houses / small shopkeepers will not be harassed in the ongoing eviction drive in the state.
