New Delhi, Dec 19: The Lok Sabha on Thursday passed the Viksit Bharat – Guarantee for Rozgar and Ajeevika Mission (Gramin) Bill, 2025 (VB–G Ram G Bill) amid loud protests and sloganeering by Opposition members. The Bill, which seeks to replace the Mahatma Gandhi National Rural Employment Guarantee Act (MGNREGA), was cleared through a voice vote despite sustained disruption in the House.
Opposition MPs strongly objected to the proposed legislation, accusing the Centre of diluting the rights-based framework of MGNREGA. During the debate, several members tore copies of the Bill and threw paper pieces in the Lok Sabha, raising slogans against the government.
The Bill was taken up for passage after Union Rural Development Minister Shivraj Singh Chouhan replied to the discussion, defending the proposed changes and reiterating the government’s commitment to employment generation in rural areas.
Following the passage of the Bill amid the din, the House was adjourned till 11 am on Friday, the final day of the ongoing Winter Session of Parliament.
