Lok Sabha Extends Tenure of Panel Reviewing ‘One Nation, One Election’ Bills

Committee gets extension until last week of Budget Session 2026 to study constitutional and legal implications

New Delhi, Dec 11: The Lok Sabha on Thursday approved an extension of the tenure of the parliamentary committee tasked with examining key bills aimed at implementing One Nation, One Election  a system to hold simultaneous polls for the Lok Sabha and state assemblies.

Committee Chairman P. P. Chaudhary moved the motion seeking to extend the term of the Joint Committee on the Constitution (129th Amendment) Bill, 2024, and the Union Territories Laws (Amendment) Bill, 2024. The panel’s tenure has now been extended up to the first day of the last week of the 2026 Budget Session.

The House adopted the motion through a voice vote.

Since its formation in December last year, the committee has held extensive consultations with constitutional experts, economists, and Law Commission Chairman Dinesh Maheshwari, among others, to assess the legal, logistical and constitutional dimensions of holding simultaneous elections across the country.
