Srinagar, Feb 11: Leader of Opposition Sunil Sharma on Wednesday alleged partiality by the Speaker of the Jammu and Kashmir Assembly, claiming that legislative proceedings were being steered in favour of the ruling coalition a development he described as detrimental to parliamentary functioning.
The accusation followed controversial remarks attributed to Chief Minister Omar Abdullah during a recent session, which Sharma said left several legislators uneasy. He argued that the Chief Minister should have clarified his statements personally and addressed concerns raised by the Opposition.
“They have no answer,” Sharma said while speaking to reporters, stressing that he had already flagged the issue and was raising it again to ensure accountability within the House.
Sharma also trained his guns on the National Conference, accusing its leadership of displaying political arrogance. Referring to the party’s legacy, he claimed that dynastic roots had fostered a sense of entitlement and pointed to what he described as a history of internal rifts.
Maintaining that the Chief Minister had shown little regret over the episode, the Opposition leader questioned the standards of a legislature where such conduct was allowed to pass without reprimand, and criticised the Speaker for permitting it.
