NEW DELHI, Aug 13: Larsen & Toubro has secured a contract worth up to Rs 15,000 crore to develop a major artificial intelligence data centre in India, marking a significant expansion of the country’s AI infrastructure ecosystem.
The project has been awarded by US based cloud platform Together AI and will involve the development of an advanced facility equipped with high-performance chips supplied by Nvidia.
The contract is valued at up to $1.57 billion, according to Reuters, making it one of the more significant recent investments in India’s rapidly growing AI infrastructure sector.
The facility is expected to provide the computing capacity required to support increasingly sophisticated artificial intelligence applications. AI models require substantial processing power, particularly during training and large-scale deployment, increasing demand for specialised data centres.
The project also highlights the growing role of Indian infrastructure companies in the country’s technology expansion. L&T has traditionally been associated with engineering and construction projects, while the new contract places the company more prominently in the emerging AI infrastructure market.
The demand for AI computing capacity has surged globally as companies invest heavily in generative AI, machine learning and automated systems. India is also seeking to strengthen domestic capabilities in artificial intelligence, semiconductor manufacturing and advanced computing.
The L&T project comes as India accelerates efforts to build an integrated technology ecosystem covering chips, computing infrastructure, AI research and digital services. Government initiatives and private-sector investments are increasingly focused on reducing dependence on overseas technology infrastructure and positioning India as a major technology hub.
The development is expected to further boost India’s position in the global AI infrastructure race while creating demand for specialised engineering, data-centre and technology expertise.
