Mamata Banerjee Steps Down from 20+ Posts Ahead of West Bengal Assembly Elections

Banerjee steps down from multiple roles to avoid “office of profit” issues; voter list revisions leave many relieved, others anxious.

KOLKATA: Ahead of the West Bengal Assembly elections, Chief Minister Mamata Banerjee has resigned from more than 20 positions held across various state committees, according to a note submitted by the Bengal government to the Election Commission on Tuesday.

The move comes as part of efforts to avoid any “office of profit” complications before filing her nomination. The posts relinquished include key roles such as head of the State Health Mission and chairperson of bodies like the State Land Use Board, Urdu Academy and State Board for Wildlife.

Meanwhile, the publication of the first supplementary voter list has brought mixed reactions across the state. While some electors cleared scrutiny and found their names included, many others continue to remain under adjudication, uncertain about their electoral status.

Several residents expressed relief after their names appeared in the updated rolls, calling it a welcome correction. However, a large number of voters are still awaiting clarity, raising concerns over delays, technical glitches and alleged administrative errors in the verification process.

Complaints have also emerged about difficulties accessing the electoral lists online, with party workers and voters alike reporting non-functional websites and lack of communication from officials.

With another revised list expected later this week, uncertainty persists among those still under review, as they await confirmation of their eligibility to vote in the upcoming polls.
