Mysur, Feb 09 : Union Minister H.D. Kumaraswamy has announced plans to establish a global-standard Automotive Research Association of India (ARAI) centre in Mandya, with an initial investment of ₹500 crore. The facility, proposed in his Lok Sabha constituency, is expected to strengthen Karnataka’s automobile ecosystem and accelerate industrial development in the Mysuru region.
Speaking at a press conference in Mysuru, Kumaraswamy said around 100 acres of land would be required for the project and that he has written to Chief Minister Siddaramaiah seeking early allotment. He expressed confidence that the state government would extend support, noting that budgetary provisions for the centre have already been made.
Describing the project as a major step forward, the Union Minister said the advanced testing and research hub would serve as a catalyst for automotive innovation across the state while generating new investment opportunities.
ARAI, an autonomous body under the Ministry of Heavy Industries, is India’s leading authority for vehicle testing, certification and research. Headquartered in Pune, the organisation plays a critical role in ensuring compliance with safety, emission and technical standards while bridging the gap between policymakers and the auto industry.
Kumaraswamy revealed that the State Revenue Department has already instructed the Mandya Deputy Commissioner to identify suitable land. He added that the project reflects the Centre’s commitment to expanding high-quality infrastructure for the automobile sector.
Responding to queries about development initiatives in Mandya, the minister said the proposed centre demonstrates tangible progress for the constituency. He emphasised that the first phase alone would bring ₹500 crore in investment, with further expansion expected once land allocation is finalised.
