Manipur Violence: 60 Dead, 231 Injured, and 1,700 Houses Burnt Down

Manipur Chief Minister Announces Ex Gratia of Rs 5 Lakh for Kin of Deceased

09-05-2023: The northeastern state of Manipur witnessed violent clashes resulting in the loss of 60 lives, with over 200 people injured and 1,700 houses and religious places burnt down. The Chief Minister of Manipur, N Biren Singh, addressed a press conference and announced an ex gratia of Rs 5 lakh for the families of the deceased, Rs 2 lakh for those who suffered major injuries and Rs 25,000 for those with minor injuries. The state government will also provide Rs 2 lakh to those whose houses were destroyed, and it will rebuild the houses. More than 20,000 people who were stranded in relief camps have been moved to safety, and the government is working to transport another 10,000 stranded people to safety as soon as possible. The Chief Minister appealed to the people to bring peace together at the earliest.

A cabinet panel has been formed to oversee the movement of the stranded people to their respective places. The government has also initiated many steps to identify vulnerable areas and ensure the round-the-clock provision of full-proof security and protection for land and property in the absence of their owners. The situation in Manipur is fast returning to normal, and 218 FIRs were registered against miscreants involved in the rioting. The violence broke out after a ‘Tribal Solidarity March’ was organized to protest against the Meitei community’s demand for Scheduled Tribe (ST) status. Meiteis account for about 53 per cent of Manipur’s population and live mostly in the Imphal valley, while tribals such as Nagas and Kukis constitute another 40 per cent of the population and live in the hill districts.
