Prime Minister highlights the region’s rising sports culture and youth inspiration following landmark cricket success

NEW DELHI, Mar 29: Prime Minister Narendra Modi on Sunday commended the Jammu and Kashmir cricket team for clinching their maiden Ranji Trophy title, calling it a landmark moment that reflects years of dedication and perseverance. He expressed optimism that athletes from the Union Territory will continue to achieve greater milestones in the future.

Speaking during his monthly radio programme Mann Ki Baat, the Prime Minister noted that March has been particularly thrilling for cricket enthusiasts across the country, marked by major achievements and memorable matches.

He recalled the nationwide celebrations following India’s triumph in the ICC Men’s T20 World Cup and highlighted another remarkable moment when Jammu and Kashmir secured their first ever Ranji Trophy title in a gripping contest held in Hubli, Karnataka.

Describing the victory as historic, Modi pointed out that the achievement came after nearly seven decades of effort and commitment by players and support staff. He praised captain Paras Dogra for his leadership and contribution to the team’s success.

The Prime Minister also lauded young bowler Aaqib Nabi, whose exceptional performance, including a remarkable tally of 60 wickets in the tournament, has drawn widespread appreciation.

Modi said the triumph has generated immense pride among players, coaches, and residents of Jammu and Kashmir, while also boosting enthusiasm for sports among the region’s youth. He added that such achievements would encourage more young people to pursue sporting careers.

Highlighting the growing sports culture in the Union Territory, he noted that places like Gulmarg have already gained recognition for hosting national-level events such as the Khelo India Winter Games. He also mentioned the popularity of football among youngsters.

Expressing confidence in the region’s sporting future, the Prime Minister said he hopes athletes from Jammu and Kashmir will continue their winning momentum in the years ahead.
