LUCKNOW, Sept 6: BSP president Mayawati on Sunday expressed concern over the alleged politicisation of movements highlighting the concerns of Gen-Z, students and unemployed youth, saying the development had created doubts among young people.
In a post on X, the former Uttar Pradesh chief minister said several developments across the country had raised questions over whether the CJP-backed Gen-Z movement, which initially focused on issues affecting young people and job seekers, was gradually losing its independent character.
Mayawati said young people and students who had been shown “big dreams” during the Jantar Mantar protest were now facing uncertainty as political parties were allegedly becoming increasingly involved in such campaigns.
She maintained that the BSP had consistently supported the legitimate concerns of Gen-Z and Gen-Alpha and remained committed to addressing issues affecting students, unemployed youth and other sections of society.
Mayawati said BSP units across states had been instructed to approach the authorities concerned in their respective areas and remain prepared to facilitate a peaceful resolution of grievances raised by young people.
However, she directed BSP workers not to participate in dharnas, demonstrations or other agitations, citing party discipline. Instead, she asked them to conserve their physical, mental and financial resources for the upcoming electoral battles.
The BSP chief said her party’s objective was to establish a government guided by the principle of “Sarvajan Hitay, Sarvajan Sukhay” — welfare and happiness for all and provide sustainable solutions to the concerns of Gen-Z, Gen-Alpha and society at large.
She claimed that the BSP had demonstrated its commitment to this approach during its four terms in power in Uttar Pradesh.
Mayawati also referred to the alleged assault on Sanjay Azad during the Gen-Z movement at Jantar Mantar, saying the incident could have been prevented if the police had acted promptly.
She demanded strict legal action against those accused and said the BSP would continue to raise its voice on such matters whenever necessary.
The case concerns an alleged assault on Azad, the father of a minor activist, by Hindutva influencer Swatantra Bhardwaj. Azad reportedly sustained a head injury in the incident. Bhardwaj was subsequently arrested in connection with the case after allegedly speaking about the assault and claiming that his political connections would provide him protection.
