Lucknow, Aug. 3: Bahujan Samaj Party (BSP) president Mayawati on Monday called for the Uttar Pradesh Assembly’s Monsoon Session to prioritise governance, public welfare and key policy matters instead of political confrontation and repeated disruptions.
With the four day session commencing on Monday and the state government’s supplementary budget scheduled to be tabled on Tuesday, the former Uttar Pradesh chief minister said citizens expect lawmakers to use the limited time for meaningful discussions on issues affecting the public.
In a message shared on X, Mayawati expressed hope that the Assembly would avoid the disruptions witnessed in the ongoing Parliament session and instead focus on matters of national importance, governance and people’s concerns.
She also raised concerns over the declining number of sitting days for legislatures, saying shorter sessions could weaken democratic institutions and reduce opportunities for detailed debate and scrutiny of government policies.
The BSP supremo emphasised that legislatures play a vital constitutional role by ensuring administrative accountability and keeping the bureaucracy committed to its constitutional responsibilities and public service.
Questioning whether a brief sitting could effectively address the state’s pressing issues, Mayawati warned that such sessions risk becoming procedural exercises unless legislators engage in serious and productive deliberations.
She underlined that a strong and effective legislature is essential for protecting constitutional values, reinforcing democratic institutions and ensuring transparent governance. According to her, both the treasury benches and the opposition have a shared responsibility to uphold parliamentary decorum and work in the larger public interest.
The BSP currently has a single representative in the 403-member Uttar Pradesh Assembly.
