SHILLONG, Feb 1: Meghalaya Chief Minister Conrad K Sangma on Saturday said the Union Budget 2026–27 underlines the Centre’s determination to develop the Northeast as a key driver of economic growth in eastern India.
In a social media post, Sangma described the Budget as forward looking and comprehensive, noting its emphasis on inclusive and people oriented development. He said the targeted focus on the Northeast reflects the government’s intent to unlock the region’s economic potential.
The chief minister expressed appreciation to Prime Minister Narendra Modi and Finance Minister Nirmala Sitharaman for what he called their sustained commitment to balanced national growth.
Highlighting specific proposals, Sangma pointed to the emphasis on ‘Purvodaya’ states and the plan to develop an integrated East Coast Industrial Corridor, which is expected to enhance industrial activity and connectivity in the eastern region.
He also welcomed provisions for strengthening urban mobility, including the introduction of 4,000 electric buses across the Northeast to improve public transport infrastructure.
The Budget further outlines the development of five tourism destinations across the five Purvodaya states, a move aimed at generating employment and expanding tourism opportunities. In addition, the proposed Buddhist Circuit is expected to promote cultural tourism and improve regional connectivity.
