Jammu, 01-12-2024: Peoples Democratic Party (PDP) president Mehbooba Mufti has called for a united fight against divisive forces, warning that the current atmosphere of polarization could lead to a situation reminiscent of the communal riots of 1947. Addressing party workers in Jammu, Mehbooba expressed concern over the deepening divides in Indian society, which she believes are being deliberately fostered. She emphasized that the country was built on the principles of secularism and inclusion by leaders like Mahatma Gandhi, Jawaharlal Nehru, Maulana Abul Kalam Azad, Sardar Vallabhbhai Patel, and B.R. Ambedkar, who envisioned a nation where people of all religions could coexist in harmony. Gandhi’s ultimate sacrifice for these ideals, she said, underscores the importance of protecting the country’s secular fabric.
Mehbooba accused the BJP-led central government of prioritizing divisive agendas over addressing the real issues faced by the public. She criticized the government for ignoring pressing concerns such as unemployment, inadequate healthcare, and poor infrastructure, instead engaging in activities that deepen communal discord. Referring to claims about religious sites, including the Ajmer Sharif Dargah, Mehbooba said such efforts to rewrite history serve only to alienate communities. She also pointed to incidents like the recent killing of four youths in Uttar Pradesh’s Sambhal district, lamenting the lack of accountability and the targeting of those who speak out against injustices.
In her address, Mehbooba highlighted India’s unique position as a secular nation, arguing that it must not lose sight of this defining characteristic. Drawing a comparison with neighboring Bangladesh, where minorities face persecution, she questioned what would differentiate India from others if it began treating its minorities similarly. She urged people to resist the divisive rhetoric, emphasizing that the majority of Hindus in the country remain committed to secular values. Mehbooba called on the people of Jammu to take on a larger role in preserving communal harmony, praising the region’s diverse and inclusive culture as a model for the rest of the country.
The PDP leader also expressed concerns about irregularities in recent election processes, alleging discrepancies in voter turnout figures. She noted the unexplained surge in voting percentages after polling hours, raising questions about transparency and fairness. Mehbooba accused the Election Commission of remaining silent on these matters, suggesting that deliberate attempts are being made to undermine democratic institutions.
As the panchayat and urban local body elections approach, Mehbooba appealed to the people of Jammu and Kashmir to support her party. She argued that the region is currently governed by “half governments,” with the NC-Congress coalition on one side and the BJP ruling through the Lieutenant Governor on the other. She urged voters to give the PDP a chance to address the region’s challenges more effectively, promising a governance model rooted in inclusivity and progress.
Concluding her speech, Mehbooba stressed the need for collective action to counter the forces threatening India’s secular identity. She warned that failure to unite against such divisive agendas would endanger the very fabric of the nation. Reiterating her belief in India’s pluralistic ethos, she urged people to reject polarization and work towards a future of unity and harmony.
