MET Department Issues Advisory: Intense Rain and Snow to Hit Jammu and Kashmir Till Feb 28

Srinagar, Feb 25: The Jammu and Kashmir region is set to experience intense weather conditions as the Meteorological (MET) Department has issued an advisory warning of heavy rain and snowfall over the next three days. The alert, sent to the Divisional Commissioners of Kashmir and Jammu, highlights the arrival of a fresh Western Disturbance (WD), which is expected to impact the region from the evening of February 25 to February 28.

According to the advisory, widespread moderate rain, snow, and thunderstorms are forecasted across most parts of Jammu and Kashmir. The initial phase of light to moderate precipitation will begin over north and central Kashmir on the evening or night of February 25. The intensity and distribution of the weather system are likely to increase gradually, leading to potentially severe disruptions in air and surface transportation.

The MET Department has specifically warned that the middle and higher reaches of Kashmir, as well as hilly areas of Jammu, are expected to receive moderate to heavy snowfall. Moreover, certain higher-altitude regions in south Kashmir and the Chenab Valley may experience heavy to very heavy snowfall, particularly on February 27 and 28.

Authorities have advised farmers to suspend all agricultural activities during this period due to the risk of landslides, shooting stones, and mudslides in vulnerable areas. The advisory further noted that Jammu and Kashmir has recorded an 80% rainfall deficit in January and February, resulting in drastically low water levels in rivers and drying up of numerous springs across the Kashmir Valley. Many still-active springs are flowing at reduced capacity, raising concerns about potential water shortages in the coming months.

If the higher altitudes do not receive substantial snowfall before the end of the winter season, experts warn that the prolonged dry spell could lead to an unprecedented water crisis, making the summer months particularly challenging for residents.

Meanwhile, temperatures across the region continue to fluctuate. Srinagar recorded a minimum temperature of 4.9°C, while popular tourist destinations like Gulmarg and Pahalgam registered sub-zero temperatures at -1.3°C and -0.3°C, respectively. Jammu city recorded 13.5°C, Katra 12.7°C, Batote 7.5°C, Banihal 3.7°C, and Bhaderwah 4°C.

Authorities are urging residents to stay alert and take necessary precautions as the inclement weather unfolds over the next three days.
