Mexcio, Dec 29 : At least 13 people were killed and 98 others injured when a passenger train derailed on the interoceanic corridor of the Isthmus of Tehuantepec Railway in Mexico on Sunday, the Mexican Navy Secretariat confirmed. The accident occurred on the Salina Cruz–Coatzacoalcos route and involved Line Z of the railway, which was carrying around 250 passengers at the time.
Of the 98 injured, 36 are receiving hospital treatment, while the remaining passengers sustained minor injuries. A total of 139 passengers were reported to be out of danger.
In a statement, the Mexican Navy expressed condolences to the families of the deceased and reaffirmed its commitment to acting responsibly and transparently, while providing immediate support to those affected.
Extensive search and rescue operations were launched following the accident, involving 360 naval personnel, 20 vehicles, four ground ambulances, three air ambulances, and a tactical drone to support emergency response efforts. Authorities are coordinating with relevant agencies to determine the cause of the derailment and ensure aid for victims and their families.
Mexican President Claudia Sheinbaum Pardo directed the Secretary of the Navy and the Deputy Secretary of Human Rights of the Interior Ministry to travel to the accident site to assist affected families personally. She confirmed that the injured passengers are receiving treatment at IMSS hospitals in Matías Romero and Salina Cruz, as well as IMSS-Wellbeing hospitals in Juchitan and Ixtepec, and ordered local officials to support relief and medical operations.
“The Secretariat of the Navy has informed me that, unfortunately, 13 people died in the Interoceanic Train accident, and 98 were injured, five seriously. I have instructed officials to coordinate relief efforts and provide support to families,” the President said in a post on X.
