Jammu, 20-09-2025: The Environment Unit of MIER College of Education (Autonomous) organized a symposium on 16th September 2025 to commemorate World Ozone Day on the theme “Scientific Discoveries and Global Actions for Ozone Layer Protection.” The event was held in collaboration with the Department of Ecology, Environment, and Remote Sensing, Government of J&K, with the objective of sensitizing students and faculty about the crucial role of the ozone layer in sustaining life on Earth and the urgent need for its protection.
The programme commenced with a warm welcome by Dr. Monika Bajaj, Head, School of Social Sciences and Humanities (SSSH). The Chief Guest of the event, Dr. Rajan Singh, SFSESC/Coordinator, EIACP, Department of Ecology, Environment, and Remote Sensing, J&K, delivered the keynote lecture. In his address, he emphasized the importance of ozone conservation, highlighted major scientific discoveries related to the ozone layer, and shed light on the global actions, policies, and collaborative initiatives taken worldwide to reduce ozone-depleting substances and restore the protective shield of the Earth.
The symposium provided a platform for student participants of MIER College to deliberate upon the theme and share their innovative ideas, perspectives, and strategies for ozone conservation. Around 15 students took part in the event, presenting well-researched viewpoints and creative approaches. Their presentations were evaluated by a distinguished panel of judges comprising Mr. Anil Sharma, Range Officer, EIACP; Dr. Kirti Joshi, Program Officer, EIACP; and Prof. Nishta Rana, Head, School of Education, MIER College of Education. After a rigorous evaluation, the jury announced the winners: Ms. Aditi Mahajan, B.A Hons. (Psychology), Semester VII, secured the First Position; Mr. Unmesh Kant Singh, B.A Hons. (Political Science), Semester V, won the Second Position; and Ms. Ananya, B.A Hons. (Psychology), Semester VII, bagged the Third Position. The results were formally declared by Dr. Bharti Tandon, Deputy Head, SoE.
As a token of appreciation, Prof. Adit Gupta, Principal & Director, and Mrs. Rupa Gupta, Joint Director, MIER College of Education, presented mementos to the Chief Guest and the panel of judges. The event was efficiently conducted by Ms. Ishika Bali, student of B.Ed. Semester II, who ensured smooth proceedings throughout the programme. The symposium concluded with the distribution of refreshments to all participants and attendees, facilitated by faculty members and student volunteers.
Prof. Adit Gupta, in his concluding remarks, congratulated the winners and praised the enthusiastic participation of the students. He also congratulated the Environment Unit for successfully organizing the programme and emphasized that celebrating World Ozone Day is a vital reminder of humanity’s collective responsibility to safeguard the ozone layer for future generations.
The entire event was successfully organized under the overall guidance of Mrs. Suman Gupta, Assistant Professor and Incharge, Environment Unit, and Ms. Jasleen Kour, Assistant Professor and Member, Environment Unit MIER College.
