Mizoram Police Nab 71 in Massive Anti-Drug Operation, 15 Foreign Nationals Among Arrested

Operation Jericho Seizes ₹16.10 Crore Worth of Narcotics, Targets Cross-Border Smuggling from Myanmar

Mizoram, Oct 22 : A large scale anti drug operation in Mizoram, led jointly by the Mizoram Police, State Excise and Narcotics Department, and the Young Mizo Association (YMA), has resulted in the arrest of 71 individuals, including 15 foreign nationals, in a crackdown on narcotics smuggling.

Inspector General of Police H. Ramthiengliana confirmed that “Operation Jericho” has recovered contraband worth ₹16.10 crore so far. The crackdown has also disrupted the local drug market, with heroin prices for 13–14 grams soaring from ₹25,000 to nearly ₹40,000, reflecting a significant slowdown in supply.

Mizoram, bordering Myanmar and part of the notorious Golden Triangle, has long faced challenges from cross border drug trafficking. Rugged terrain and ethnic ties have made it both a transit and consumption hub for narcotics. The arrests of foreign nationals highlight the transnational nature of the smuggling network and underscore the need for stronger international cooperation.

Authorities praised the role of the Young Mizo Association in mobilizing community support, raising awareness, and assisting with intelligence gathering. This collaboration between law enforcement and civil society is being viewed as a model for tackling drug trafficking across northeastern India.

In Champhai district, a key entry point for smuggled narcotics, officials registered 87 cases and arrested 112 individuals from January to September this year. Mizoram Chief Minister Lalduhoma emphasized that while enforcement remains a priority, rehabilitation efforts are equally important to address the drug crisis holistically.

The operation demonstrates Mizoram’s determined effort to dismantle organized drug syndicates and curb the flow of narcotics from international borders.
