MULCO to Expand Market Reach as Amit Sharma Emphasizes Quality, Branding & Farmer Support

Aizawl, Mizoram | March 3, 2025: In a concerted effort to enhance the dairy cooperative sector in Mizoram, Secretary to the Government, Cooperation Department, Amit Sharma, along with Registrar of Cooperative Societies (RCS), John L. Sanga, visited the Mizoram Milk Producers Cooperative Union Limited (MULCO) headquarters in Aizawl. They were received by MULCO Managing Director Harsh Vardhan, Manager Lalhmunliani, and other senior officials.

The visit focused on assessing MULCO’s operations, improving milk production, strengthening market linkages, and expanding branding initiatives to boost the cooperative’s overall growth. Amit Sharma engaged in detailed discussions on enhancing milk production through Primary Agricultural Cooperative Societies (PACS) and outlined a strategic roadmap for the sector’s long-term sustainability.

During the interaction, it was noted that MULCO has a well-established network across Mizoram but requires continuous support from the National Dairy Development Board (NDDB) to scale up its operations. In response, the Secretary emphasized the need for proactive measures, including

      1. Providing cattle feed at subsidized rates to support farmers.
      2. Ensuring fair and competitive pricing for milk procurement.
      3. Expanding the marketing network by targeting institutional buyers such as the Army, Assam Rifles, and other organizations to meet their high daily demand for dairy products.

Sharma, along with RCS and MULCO officials, conducted an on-site review of the milk production facility, which has a capacity of 20,000 liters per day. The team inspected quality control labs, packaging units, and production lines manufacturing a variety of dairy products, including lassi, paneer, sweet curd, desi ghee, and rasgullas.

While acknowledging the challenges faced by the dairy sector in Mizoram, including limited availability of milch animals, scarcity of water and fodder, and difficult grazing conditions in the hilly terrain, Sharma assured full government support in addressing these concerns.

He further encouraged MULCO to work towards becoming a leading dairy cooperative in the Northeast, similar to AMUL and urged the cooperative to take strategic steps to increase farmer participation through PACS. He assured that the Cooperation Department would provide all necessary guidance and assistance in achieving this goal.

The visit reaffirmed the government’s commitment to strengthening the cooperative dairy sector in Mizoram, with a focus on boosting rural employment, improving food security, and promoting self-reliance in dairy production.
