WASHINGTON, Jun 10: Prime Minister Narendra Modi on Wednesday achieved a historic milestone by becoming India’s longest serving elected Prime Minister, completing 4,399 consecutive days in office and surpassing the record previously held by Jawaharlal Nehru.
The achievement prompted congratulatory messages from prominent US lawmakers, business leaders and members of the Indian diaspora, who praised Modi’s leadership and India’s growing stature on the global stage.
US Senator John Cornyn of Texas, Co-Chair of the Senate India Caucus, extended his greetings through social media, describing the milestone as a reflection of the trust placed in Modi by more than 1.4 billion Indians through three successive electoral mandates.
Cornyn noted that India has witnessed significant economic and social progress during the past decade, citing poverty reduction, rapid economic expansion and the strengthening of strategic ties between New Delhi and Washington. He said the relationship between the two democracies has reached unprecedented levels under the current leadership.
Republican Senator Bill Hagerty also congratulated the Prime Minister, stating that India and the United States have developed a broader and more comprehensive partnership during Modi’s tenure. He highlighted growing cooperation in areas ranging from trade and technology to defence and regional security.
American singer and cultural ambassador Mary Millben described the occasion as a landmark moment in modern Indian history. In her message, she commended Modi’s diplomatic approach and his ability to maintain stable international relations while consistently prioritising India’s national interests.
Corporate leaders also joined in recognising the achievement. Nikesh Arora, Chief Executive Officer of Palo Alto Networks, praised Modi’s leadership and acknowledged the public mandate that has kept him in office for more than a decade.
With Wednesday’s milestone, Modi surpassed the elected tenure record of India’s first Prime Minister Jawaharlal Nehru. Nehru served from May 13, 1952, until his death on May 27, 1964, completing 4,398 days as an elected Prime Minister after India’s first general election.
Political observers note that while Nehru also headed the government between 1947 and 1952, that period preceded India’s first nationwide elections and was therefore considered part of the interim government era.
Former Prime Minister Indira Gandhi remains among the country’s longest serving leaders, having held office for about 14 years across two separate terms. However, her tenure was interrupted after the 1977 general elections, resulting in a break in service.
Modi first assumed office in May 2014 and has since secured three consecutive electoral victories, making him one of the most influential political figures in independent India’s history. Supporters credit his government with advancing infrastructure development, digital transformation, welfare programmes and economic reforms, while also elevating India’s profile in global affairs.
The milestone is being viewed by supporters as another significant chapter in India’s democratic journey, reflecting sustained public support and political continuity in the world’s largest democracy.
