Mohali, Dec 16: A kabaddi tournament in Mohali’s Sohana area descended into chaos on Monday when unidentified gunmen opened fire during a live match, critically injuring the event’s promoter.
The incident took place at a playground in Sector 82, where a large crowd had gathered to watch the tournament. According to eyewitnesses, the attackers arrived in a Bolero vehicle and fired multiple rounds before fleeing. Several spectators initially mistook the gunfire for firecrackers, but panic ensued as the shots continued, with bullets reportedly passing close to onlookers.
The promoter, Rana Balachauria, sustained gunshot wounds to the head and face and was rushed to a nearby hospital, where his condition remains critical. Balachauria was associated with organizing the tournament through a local sports club, supported by a gurdwara management committee.
Police teams from Mohali quickly reached the scene, cordoned off the area, and began investigating. CCTV footage from the venue and surrounding locations is being reviewed to identify the attackers and establish the motive behind the shooting. The match, which was being live streamed, also captured the gunfire on camera.
Punjabi singer Mankirt Aulakh was scheduled to attend the event later but was not present during the attack. Authorities have assured the public that a detailed investigation is underway and that security arrangements for future sporting events will be thoroughly reviewed.
