Srinagar, Oct 24: The ruling National Conference (NC) secured a dominant victory in the Rajya Sabha elections in Jammu and Kashmir on Friday, winning three of the four seats, while the Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP) claimed the remaining one. The results mark a significant political moment, reflecting the regional party’s legislative strength and the opposition’s steady presence.
According to official announcements, NC stalwarts Chowdhary Mohammad Ramzan and Sajad Kichloo emerged victorious in the first two seats, securing a clear majority in the voting pattern. The party’s treasurer, G. S. Oberoi, popularly known as Shammi Oberoi, won the third seat, solidifying the NC’s overwhelming performance.
The BJP, meanwhile, ensured its representation in the Upper House, as its candidate, Sat Sharma, won the fourth seat, securing 32 votes against NC’s Imran Nabi Dar, who managed 22 votes. A BJP spokesperson termed the win as a “reflection of the party’s expanding reach and organizational discipline” within the Union Territory’s evolving political landscape.
The outcome of the Rajya Sabha polls comes amid renewed political realignments in Jammu and Kashmir. The NC had fielded candidates for all four seats, while the BJP, backed by the support of its alliance partners and Independents, contested three. The Congress and the People’s Democratic Party (PDP) had earlier declared their support for the NC, terming it a collective effort to prevent the BJP from increasing its numbers in the Rajya Sabha.
