Natrang celebrates World Theatre Day: Honours Neeraj Kant with lifetime achievement award

Jammu, March 27, 2026: Natrang Jammu today conferred the Lifetime Achievement Award in Theatre for the year 2026 upon eminent theatre personality Neeraj Kant in recognition of his outstanding contribution to Indian theatre in connection with World Theatre Day Celebrations-2026. The award was presented by Natrang director and Padma Shri awardee Balwant Thakur at a function attended by prominent artists, intellectuals, and theatre enthusiasts. The honour carries a shawl and a cash award of ₹50,000.

Neeraj Kant is a distinguished name in the theatre world, whose association with Natrang Repertory Company spans nearly four decades. Beginning his journey 38 years ago, Kant rose from Assistant Director to become the Chief of the Repertory Company in 1990. His immense dedication and artistic vision have played a pivotal role in shaping the theatre movement in Jammu and Kashmir.

Over the years, Kant has directed more than 200 one-act plays, demonstrating remarkable versatility and creative excellence. His repertoire includes notable productions such as Bhaag Beta Bhaag, Girgit, Hawalat, Sadgati, Andher Nagri, Raavi Paar, and The Dear Departed. His work reflects a deep understanding of diverse themes, ranging from social issues to human emotions, consistently leaving a lasting impact on audiences.

As an actor, Neeraj Kant has delivered over 3,500 performances in more than 150 plays and has participated in over 300 national and international theatre festivals, including Bharat Rang Mahotsav and other prestigious platforms across India. His performances in plays like Bawa Jitto, Mahabhoj, Kabira Khada Bazar Mein, and Toba Tek Singh have earned him widespread acclaim.

Apart from his artistic achievements, Kant has made significant contributions to theatre education and research. A recipient of the Junior Fellowship from the Department of Culture, Government of India, he has conducted over 200 theatre workshops for children and youth, nurturing the next generation of artists. His association with institutions like the Sangeet Natak Akademi reflects his continued commitment to the growth of theatre.

Speaking on the occasion, Balwant Thakur said, “Neeraj Kant is not just an artist but an institution in himself. His unwavering commitment, discipline, and passion for theatre have strengthened Natrang and enriched the cultural fabric of our society. His journey is a shining example of dedication and excellence, inspiring generations of theatre practitioners.”

The award ceremony celebrated Neeraj Kant’s lifelong dedication to theatre, acknowledging his invaluable contribution as a director, actor, mentor, and cultural ambassador.
