Jammu, Oct 9: BJP National General Secretary and party in-charge for Jammu and Kashmir, Tarun Chugh, has called on the National Conference (NC) government to publicly release a “first-year report card” detailing its achievements and promises fulfilled since assuming power. Speaking at a press interaction in Jammu, Chugh said the Omar Abdullah-led government owes the people transparency and accountability, as it nears completion of its first year in office.
Chugh alleged that the NC has failed to deliver on key electoral promises and is instead attempting to divert public attention by reviving the “dual-power system” debate referring to the working relationship between the elected government and the office of the Lieutenant Governor. “The NC government should stop blaming the system and start delivering. I urge Chief Minister Omar Abdullah to come forward and share his government’s report card, the promises made and how many of them have actually been fulfilled,” he said.
The senior BJP leader maintained that the Lieutenant Governor, Manoj Sinha, has extended full support to the elected government and approved 95 percent of the decisions taken by the cabinet. “The LG has never blocked or withheld any decision that benefits the public. The National Conference is using this narrative as a smokescreen to hide its administrative failures,” Chugh said, accusing the government of “enjoying power rather than serving the people.”
He further alleged that the NC-led administration has shown indifference to key sectors such as tourism, which continues to struggle in the aftermath of the April 22 Pahalgam terror attack. “Tourism, once the pride of Jammu and Kashmir, is facing neglect and mismanagement. Instead of focusing on rebuilding confidence and supporting small businesses, the government seems preoccupied with political rhetoric,” he added.
Responding to the NC’s statements demanding early restoration of statehood and removal of dual authority in governance, Chugh asserted that such arguments are politically motivated. “They have completed nearly one-fifth of their tenure and already forgotten their commitments to the people. The government should focus on delivery instead of distractions,” he remarked.
Chugh accused both the NC and the PDP of deliberately engaging in diversionary tactics to mask their failures. “These parties are experts in political theatre. They raise issues that appeal emotionally but avoid real governance responsibilities. The people of Jammu and Kashmir deserve a government that is focused on jobs, infrastructure, and peace, not slogans,” he said.
The BJP leader was speaking on the sidelines of a key party meeting held in Jammu to strategize for the upcoming Assembly bypolls in Budgam and Nagrota and the Rajya Sabha elections for four seats from the Union Territory. The meeting was attended by Union Minister Dr. Jitendra Singh, J&K BJP President Sat Sharma, and other senior leaders. It was the second high-level review meeting in less than a week, underscoring the party’s growing focus on strengthening its organizational presence in the region.
Chugh said the BJP would contest the upcoming bypolls and Rajya Sabha elections with full force and confidence, adding that the party’s strength lies in its cadre-based structure rather than dynastic politics. “The BJP is a movement of workers and ideology, not of families. Unlike other parties that are run by father-son or uncle-nephew combinations, our organization is powered by committed activists at every level,” he asserted.
Calling for political maturity and performance-based governance, Chugh concluded by emphasizing that the people of Jammu and Kashmir are looking for tangible progress, not rhetoric. “They want better roads, jobs, and security, not excuses. The NC government should remember that accountability is not an option in democracy; it is an obligation. It’s time for them to show results, not slogans,” he said.
