NC Vows Relentless Fight for J&K’s Special Status, Demands Immediate Statehood

‘Not Every Kashmiri Is a Terrorist’: NC Flags Harassment of J&K Residents Nationwide
  • Working Committee Passes Strong Resolutions; Special Status Remains NC’s Core Commitment

Srinagar, Nov 28: The National Conference (NC), currently leading the government in Jammu and Kashmir, concluded its two-day working committee meeting on Friday with the passage of a series of significant resolutions. The party reaffirmed its “unwavering commitment” to the restoration of Jammu and Kashmir’s special constitutional status and reiterated its long-standing demand for the immediate restoration of full statehood.

In its primary resolution, the Working Committee unanimously declared that the restoration of special status remains the core political aspiration of the people of Jammu and Kashmir and continues to be integral to their dignity, identity and constitutional rights. The party leadership emphasised that this issue cannot be deferred any further and pledged to continue pursuing all democratic and legal avenues to achieve this objective.

“We will continue to fight for the full restoration of Jammu and Kashmir’s special status,” the resolution stated, underscoring that the party’s historic stand remains unchanged. The committee further asserted that statehood must be restored without delay, calling it essential for democratic accountability, public trust and institutional responsibility.

The NC also strongly condemned the Delhi terror attack of November 10, which claimed at least 15 lives and left scores injured. Expressing deep anguish, the party extended condolences to the bereaved families and insisted that such barbaric violence has no place in any civilised society. The resolution demanded firm action and concerted national efforts to eradicate terrorism.

The committee expressed equal concern over the accidental blast inside Nowgam Police Station on November 14, which led to the loss of nine lives. The party demanded a high-level probe into the incident to determine whether there were any lapses in protocol or deviations from standard operating procedures.

Another resolution highlighted growing worries over the reports of harassment faced by Kashmiris across India, including students, employees, traders and migrant residents in the aftermath of recent incidents. The party urged authorities at all levels to ensure the safety, dignity and rights of people belonging to Jammu and Kashmir.

“No Kashmiri should face discrimination or be unfairly branded. Not every Kashmiri is a terrorist or a supporter of terror,” the resolution read, reflecting the party’s concern over the generalisation and stereotyping of an entire population.

Speaking to reporters after the meeting, Chief Minister Omar Abdullah maintained that the restoration of statehood is directly linked to improved security outcomes. He argued that elected governments have historically ensured a more accountable security framework.

“Did attacks like those in Pahalgam or Delhi occur when we were responsible for security?” Omar asked, asserting that during his six years as Chief Minister, no such major attacks happened under the state’s direct security administration. He said that once statehood is restored and security responsibility lies with an elected government, such incidents are far less likely.

He added that if an elected government fails to maintain security effectively, “then revoke statehood.”
Omar Abdullah also reaffirmed his belief that the Centre would eventually honour its commitment made on the floor of Parliament. He further stated that if statehood is being withheld as a form of punishment for the people of Jammu and Kashmir for not allowing the BJP to form the government, “then let it be; we will bear it.”
