NCERT Launches Revised School Textbooks Under National Education Policy 2020

Updated curriculum focuses on experiential learning, competency based education, Indian knowledge systems, and reduced academic burden for school students.

New Delhi, July 01 : The National Council of Educational Research and Training (NCERT) has rolled out newly revised textbooks for Classes 5 and 8 as part of the phased implementation of the National Education Policy (NEP) 2020 and the National Curriculum Framework (NCF). The updated books are designed to promote conceptual understanding, critical thinking, and activity-based learning while reducing rote memorization.

According to education officials, the revised textbooks incorporate competency-based learning approaches aligned with the recommendations of the National Education Policy. The curriculum emphasizes understanding rather than memorization and encourages students to apply classroom knowledge to real life situations.

The textbooks introduce several new themes, including environmental sustainability, digital literacy, constitutional values, financial awareness, and Indian cultural heritage. Greater attention has also been given to multidisciplinary learning, allowing students to connect concepts across different subjects.

NCERT has reduced unnecessary content and redesigned chapters to make learning more engaging and student-friendly. Illustrations, activities, project work, and practical exercises have been integrated throughout the books to improve classroom participation.

Teachers have been encouraged to adopt interactive teaching methods rather than relying solely on traditional lectures. The revised curriculum also includes suggestions for classroom discussions, group activities, and inquiry based learning.

The textbooks seek to strengthen foundational literacy and numeracy while gradually introducing analytical and problem-solving skills appropriate for each grade level.

Education experts believe the revised curriculum reflects a significant shift from examination-oriented learning towards holistic education. Schools are expected to receive teacher training modules to facilitate effective implementation of the updated curriculum.

Several state education boards that follow NCERT textbooks have welcomed the revised editions and are preparing to distribute the books before the commencement of the academic session.

Parents have expressed optimism regarding the reduced academic burden and greater emphasis on skill development. However, some educators have stressed the importance of adequate teacher training to ensure successful classroom implementation.

Officials stated that NCERT will continue revising textbooks for additional classes in phases over the coming years, ensuring complete alignment with NEP 2020 and the National Curriculum Framework.

The revised textbooks represent one of the most significant curriculum reforms in recent years, aiming to prepare students with the knowledge, skills, and values required for higher education, employment, and responsible citizenship in the 21st century.
