Srinagar, Mar 12: Political leaders across Jammu and Kashmir have strongly reacted to the attack on Farooq Abdullah, with National Conference MP Aga Ruhullah Mehdi and Peoples Conference chief Sajad Lone condemning the incident and urging strict legal action against the accused.
Former chief minister Farooq Abdullah, 88, narrowly escaped harm when a gunman allegedly opened fire from behind while he was leaving a wedding function in the Greater Kailash area of Jammu on Wednesday night.
Police arrested the suspected attacker, identified as Kamal Singh Jamwal, a resident of Purani Mandi in Jammu. According to investigators, the accused claimed he had been waiting for an opportunity to target the veteran leader for years.
Reacting to the incident, Mehdi described the firing as deeply disturbing and stressed that such acts of violence must be dealt with firmly under the law. In a statement shared on social media, the Srinagar MP said the attack on Abdullah and others present at the event raised serious concerns and required strict accountability.
Sajad Lone, who represents the Handwara constituency in the Jammu and Kashmir Assembly, also denounced the incident and expressed relief that no one was injured. He described the firing as a cowardly act and thanked God for the safety of Abdullah and those accompanying him at the function.
The incident has triggered widespread concern across political circles, with leaders calling for a thorough investigation to determine the motive behind the attack and ensure accountability.
