Kathmandu/Colombo: Nepal on Sunday announced a financial assistance package of $200,000 to support relief and recovery operations in flood hit Sri Lanka, where more than 200 people have died following catastrophic rains and landslides triggered by Cyclone Ditwah.
According to Sri Lanka’s Disaster Management Centre (DMC), 212 people have died and 218 remain missing, making it one of the country’s most severe weather disasters in recent years.
In its statement, Nepal’s Ministry of Foreign Affairs expressed deep condolences and affirmed solidarity with Sri Lanka as it confronts large scale humanitarian challenges.
“In the spirit of close bilateral relations, Nepal stands firmly with Sri Lanka in this difficult time,” the ministry said, extending sympathy to families of the deceased and wishing the injured a swift recovery.
Sri Lanka has declared a national emergency and appealed for international assistance. Authorities have urged Sri Lankan citizens abroad to contribute funds as the crisis continues to escalate.
The floods, fuelled by the impact of Cyclone Ditwah, have destroyed homes, submerged major towns, swept away bridges and crippled vital infrastructure. More intense rainfall is expected in the coming days, the DMC warned.
As per reports in the Daily Mirror, the devastation has affected vast regions across the island, with river levels reaching historic highs. A large-scale rescue and relief effort is underway, supported by international partners.
Over 20,500 Sri Lankan Army personnel have been deployed for rescue operations. On Saturday alone, the Army evacuated around 3,790 people, relocating them to safety centres as conditions continue to deteriorate.
