Nepal, July 28 : Nepal and India have reaffirmed their commitment to expanding judicial cooperation following high-level discussions between Nepal’s Chief Justice Manoj Kumar Sharma and India’s Chief Justice Surya Kant during Sharma’s official visit to New Delhi.
The four day visit, undertaken at the invitation of Chief Justice Surya Kant, provided an opportunity for both sides to exchange views on judicial reforms, institutional collaboration and the sharing of best practices aimed at improving the administration of justice in the two neighbouring countries.
According to Supreme Court spokesperson Arjun Prasad Koirala, the meeting centered on enhancing cooperation between the apex courts and promoting greater interaction between judicial institutions. The discussions highlighted the importance of learning from each other’s legal systems while strengthening professional engagement between judges and court officials.
As part of his official engagements, Chief Justice Sharma visited the Supreme Court of India, where he observed court proceedings and gained first-hand knowledge of India’s judicial administration, case management systems and institutional functioning. The visit enabled the Nepalese delegation to better understand operational practices that could contribute to improving judicial efficiency and court management in Nepal.
Judicial exchanges between India and Nepal have traditionally served as an important platform for strengthening legal institutions, given the close historical, cultural and constitutional ties shared by the two countries. Such interactions also encourage dialogue on modernising court systems, embracing technological advancements and improving access to justice.
Officials said the visit reflected the mutual desire of both judiciaries to continue exchanging experiences on legal administration, capacity building and judicial education. Increased cooperation is expected to support institutional development and promote the effective delivery of justice in both nations.
Chief Justice Sharma was accompanied by his spouse, Uma Sharma, and Joint Registrar Amit Upreti, who participated in the official engagements during the visit.
Legal experts believe that sustained exchanges between the highest courts of India and Nepal can contribute to stronger judicial institutions, improved administrative practices and deeper regional cooperation in the field of justice. The visit is also expected to pave the way for future collaborations involving judicial training programmes, knowledge sharing initiatives and professional exchanges between court officials.
The meeting concluded on a positive note, with both sides reaffirming the importance of maintaining regular dialogue to strengthen judicial partnerships and promote excellence in court administration across the two neighbouring countries.
