New Urine Test Shows 92% Accuracy in Detecting Bladder Cancer, Study Finds

Researchers say the minimally invasive test could make evaluation easier for patients, while showing particularly strong detection rates for aggressive forms of the disease.

NEW DELHI, Sept 8: A new urine based test has shown promising results in detecting bladder cancer, potentially offering a simpler and less invasive approach to identifying the disease, according to a recent study.

Researchers evaluated the GALEAS Bladder urine test in 964 patients across seven hospitals in the UK. The test identified 71 of 77 bladder cancer cases, giving it a reported sensitivity of 92.2 per cent.

The findings were particularly encouraging for more aggressive forms of the disease. The test detected 35 of 36 high-grade bladder cancer cases, corresponding to a detection rate of 97.2 per cent. It also identified all muscle-invasive bladder cancer cases included in the study.

Bladder cancer develops when abnormal cells grow in the tissues of the bladder. Blood in the urine is among the commonly recognised warning signs, although some patients may have blood that is not visible to the naked eye.

Current diagnostic pathways can involve multiple investigations and procedures. A reliable urine-based screening tool could potentially make the initial assessment more convenient and less burdensome for patients.

The researchers’ findings nevertheless require further evaluation before the test can be considered a replacement for established diagnostic procedures. Larger studies involving broader patient populations would be important to determine how effectively the test performs in routine clinical settings.

The results highlight continuing efforts to develop non-invasive methods for cancer detection. Such approaches could help healthcare providers identify suspected cases earlier and determine which patients require additional investigations.

If validated through further research, urine-based testing could become a useful addition to the diagnostic pathway for people being evaluated for bladder cancer.
