NEW YORK — Nick Nurse rejoined the Philadelphia 76ers on Wednesday following the funeral of his brother, Steve Nurse, as the team looked to bounce back in Game 2 of the Eastern Conference semifinals against the New York Knicks.
The veteran NBA coach traveled to Ankeny, Iowa, on Tuesday to attend funeral services for his brother, who passed away unexpectedly last week at the age of 62. Despite the emotional loss, Nurse returned to the sidelines, explaining that his brother’s love for basketball and unwavering support for the team motivated him to continue coaching during the postseason.
Speaking before tip-off in New York, Nurse reflected on how basketball has helped him cope during a difficult period.
“Being around the team, preparing for games, and staying involved in practice helps keep your mind occupied,” Nurse said. “My brother was a huge supporter, and he would absolutely want me here coaching and competing.”
The Philadelphia 76ers entered Game 2 hoping to recover after suffering a heavy 137-98 defeat in the series opener against the New York Knicks on Monday night. Philadelphia had earlier shown resilience by overcoming a 3-1 series deficit to eliminate the Boston Celtics in the opening round of the playoffs.
Nurse acknowledged the overwhelming support he and his family have received from across the basketball community since the news of his brother’s passing. He specifically thanked opposing coach Mike Brown for offering condolences before Game 2 preparations began.
The emotional return highlighted the personal challenges coaches and players often face during the intensity of postseason competition. Even while managing grief, Nurse remained focused on helping Philadelphia regroup in a critical playoff matchup.
Players and staff members within the organization also rallied around their coach, aiming to deliver a stronger performance after the disappointing opening-game loss. The atmosphere around the team reflected both determination and support as the 76ers attempted to even the series before returning home.
Nurse, known throughout the league for his calm leadership and competitive mindset, has guided Philadelphia through a demanding playoff campaign filled with adversity. His decision to return immediately after the funeral underscored his commitment to the team and the influence his brother had on his basketball journey.
As the Eastern Conference semifinal series continues, the 76ers will hope to channel that emotional strength into a much-improved effort against a confident Knicks squad in front of a packed Madison Square Garden crowd.
