NEW DELHI, Jul 27: A fresh political confrontation erupted in Parliament on Sunday after BJP Member of Parliament Nishikant Dubey launched a strong attack on Congress leader and Leader of the Opposition in the Lok Sabha, Rahul Gandhi. The BJP MP alleged that Gandhi had consistently acted in a manner that harmed India’s interests during his overseas engagements and announced that he would seek both a parliamentary move for Gandhi’s removal as Leader of the Opposition and an investigation into his foreign travels over the past two decades.
Speaking to reporters in the Parliament House complex, Dubey claimed that Gandhi’s international visits between 2004 and 2026 lacked transparency and deserved a comprehensive probe. He said he would urge the Union Government to constitute a Special Investigation Team (SIT) to examine the Congress leader’s overseas travel records, his meetings abroad, and what he described as alleged “secret agreements” with foreign entities.
The BJP leader also repeated allegations that Rahul Gandhi had become a tool for foreign interests, asserting that influential international forces were using him to target India’s image. Dubey claimed Gandhi’s political prominence stemmed primarily from his family background rather than his own political standing.
According to Dubey, questions have repeatedly been raised over the financial aspects of Gandhi’s overseas travel. He alleged that the expenditure on several foreign visits appeared inconsistent with the Congress leader’s declared sources of income and argued that greater public disclosure was necessary regarding the purpose and funding of such trips.
The Godda MP further claimed that details of Gandhi’s international engagements have never been made fully public. He questioned whom the Congress leader met during these visits, the issues discussed, and whether any financial or political commitments were made while abroad. Calling for accountability, Dubey maintained that elected representatives holding high constitutional positions should maintain complete transparency regarding their foreign interactions.
Referring to the role of the Leader of the Opposition, Dubey argued that such a constitutional office carries the responsibility of presenting India’s democratic values and policy positions before international audiences. He alleged that instead of highlighting India’s achievements and official policies, Rahul Gandhi had repeatedly criticised the country, the Central Government and its institutions during speeches delivered overseas.
Dubey asserted that such statements weaken India’s global image and provide ammunition to forces seeking to portray the country negatively on the international stage. He maintained that political differences should remain within India’s democratic framework and should not be projected abroad in a manner that undermines national interests.
Escalating his criticism, the BJP MP accused the Congress of playing a central role in activities that, according to him, were intended to create divisions within the country. He alleged that recent developments pointed towards a larger conspiracy involving individuals and organisations attempting to weaken national unity, and claimed that the Congress had been associated with several such efforts.
He further said that the government should thoroughly investigate individuals and organisations allegedly linked to these activities, including the sources of financial support and the objectives behind them. According to Dubey, a detailed inquiry would help establish the facts surrounding the allegations.
The remarks are expected to intensify the ongoing political confrontation between the BJP and the Congress, particularly during the Monsoon Session of Parliament, where both parties have repeatedly exchanged accusations over governance, national security, and foreign policy.
The Congress has consistently rejected similar allegations in the past, maintaining that Rahul Gandhi’s speeches abroad reflect democratic criticism of the government rather than criticism of the nation itself. The party has also accused the BJP of attempting to divert attention from pressing public issues by making politically motivated allegations.
With Parliament witnessing frequent confrontations between the treasury and opposition benches, Dubey’s latest demand is likely to trigger another round of heated debate over political accountability, foreign engagements of public representatives, and the constitutional responsibilities attached to the office of the Leader of the Opposition.
