New Delhi, Jan 20 : Nitin Nabin is set to formally assume charge as the new national president of the Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP) on Tuesday, marking a significant leadership transition at the helm of the ruling party’s organisation.
Ahead of the swearing-in ceremony, Nabin visited prominent religious sites in the national capital. He offered prayers at the Hanuman Mandir in the Connaught Place area and later paid obeisance at Gurudwara Bangla Sahib in central Delhi.
The swearing-in ceremony, to be held in New Delhi, is expected to be attended by Prime Minister Narendra Modi, senior BJP leaders, Chief Ministers, and members of the party’s national executive.
Elected Unopposed
Nabin’s elevation follows an unopposed election process, underscoring broad organisational support within the BJP.
In an official announcement issued late on Monday, BJP National Returning Officer K Laxman said that Nabin was the sole candidate left in the fray after the nomination, scrutiny, and withdrawal process concluded.
“Only one name, that of Nitin Nabin, remained in the fray following the completion of the nomination process,” Laxman said.
A total of 37 sets of nomination papers were submitted in support of Nabin between 2 pm and 4 pm on Monday. All nominations were found valid, with no withdrawals or competing candidates.
The election process formally moved forward after 30 of the BJP’s 36 state unit presidents were elected, crossing the 50 per cent threshold mandated under the party Constitution. The election schedule and electoral roll were notified on January 16, 2026, with nominations opening and closing on Monday, followed by scrutiny.
Prayers, Messaging and the Road Ahead
At Gurudwara Bangla Sahib, Delhi minister Manjinder Singh Sirsa welcomed Nabin’s visit and linked his appointment to the party’s broader political vision.
“Nitin Nabin arrived today at Gurudwara Bangla Sahib to pay obeisance. It is a matter of pride for us that he has come here from the land of Patna Sahib. He will make a significant contribution to Prime Minister Modi’s resolve for a developed India,” Sirsa said.
Nabin, 45, was appointed BJP National Working President on December 14, 2025. His rise within the organisation has been backed by the party’s top leadership, including Prime Minister Modi, Home Minister Amit Shah, and outgoing BJP president JP Nadda.
Senior party leaders, Chief Ministers, and representatives from several states submitted nomination papers in his favour earlier this week, signalling strong internal consensus.
As the sole candidate, Nabin will be formally elected by the BJP’s electoral college, comprising members of the national council and state councils. Under party rules, candidates must be proposed by at least 20 electoral college members from a state and must have completed a minimum of 15 years in the party.
Party leaders view Nabin’s appointment as an effort to infuse younger leadership into the organisation while maintaining continuity in the BJP’s political and organisational direction.
