Nitish Kumar Set to File Nomination for Rajya Sabha Elections

BJP chief Nitin Nabin also set to submit papers; Amit Shah expected to be present as speculation grows over Bihar CM’s possible move to Parliament

PATNA, Mar 5: Bihar Chief Minister Nitish Kumar is expected to file his nomination papers for the upcoming Rajya Sabha elections on Thursday, leaders of Janata Dal (United) said.

According to party sources, Kumar may submit his nomination at the Bihar Legislative Assembly around 11 am. Nitin Nabin, the state president of Bharatiya Janata Party, is also scheduled to file his papers the same day.

Union Home Minister Amit Shah is likely to be present during the nomination process.

State minister Vijay Kumar Chaudhary had earlier confirmed that Kumar was considering a move to the Upper House, a step that could bring an end to his long tenure as Bihar’s chief minister. Kumar has served as the state’s longest-serving leader in the top post.

The development follows the ruling National Democratic Alliance securing a sweeping victory in the 2025 Bihar Assembly elections. If Kumar shifts to Parliament, the chief minister’s post is expected to go to a BJP leader, potentially giving Bihar its first chief minister from the party.

However, an official announcement regarding Kumar’s candidature for the Upper House is yet to be made.

Elections for five Rajya Sabha seats from Bihar are scheduled for March 16. The seats are becoming vacant with the completion of terms of Harivansh Narayan Singh, Ram Nath Thakur, Prem Chand Gupta, Amarendra Dhari Singh, and Upendra Kushwaha.

Based on the current strength of parties in the state assembly, all five seats are expected to be secured by the NDA.

Before filing his nomination, Nitin Nabin is scheduled to visit the revered Mahavir Temple to offer prayers.
