NMC decision will safeguard medical education standards & students’ future, says M.K Ajatshatru Singh

Lauds Shri Mata Vaishno Devi Sangharsh Samiti, Union Health Minister for upholding public interest

JAMMU, Jan 6: Former minister and Senior BJP leader M.K. Ajatshatru Singh today welcomed the decision of the National Medical Commission (NMC) to withdraw the Letter of Permission (LoP) granted to Shri Mata Vaishno Devi Institute of Medical Excellence (SMVDIME) for starting the MBBS course for the academic session 2025–26.

Terming the NMC’s action as timely and in the larger interest of students and public health, Ajatshatru Singh said the decision vindicates long-standing concerns raised about serious deficiencies in faculty strength, clinical exposure, patient load, and essential infrastructure at the institute. He said medical education cannot be compromised at any cost, and strict adherence to prescribed norms is vital to ensure quality healthcare and patient safety.

Ajatshatru Singh also lauded the sustained and peaceful efforts of the Shri Mata Vaishno Devi Sangharsh Samiti, comprising various social and civil society organizations, for bringing the issue to the notice of the authorities. He said the Samiti played a constructive role by highlighting genuine concerns related to standards of medical education and the transparent use of resources associated with the revered Shri Mata Vaishno Devi Shrine.

Ajatshatru Singh also lauded the Union Minister for Health and Family Welfare and BJP National President, Shri Jagat Prakash Nadda for providing decisive leadership and ensuring that the National Medical Commission functions with autonomy, professionalism, and zero tolerance towards any compromise in medical education standards. He said that the Union Minister’s firm commitment to quality healthcare and transparent regulation has reinforced public confidence in national institutions and ensured that the interests of students and patients remain paramount.

He further welcomed the NMC’s direction to adjust the already admitted students in Government Medical Colleges across the Union Territory of Jammu and Kashmir as supernumerary seats, stating that this step safeguards the academic future of aspiring doctors and reflects a humane and responsible approach by the regulator.

Reiterating faith in regulatory institutions, Ajatshatru Singh said the decision sends a strong message that no institution is above established norms and that accountability and transparency must prevail, especially in sectors as sensitive as medical education. He expressed hope that all concerned authorities will ensure corrective measures and compliance in the future, so that institutions linked with public faith and trust uphold the highest standards of governance and excellence.
