SEOUL, May 28: North Korea fired a ballistic missile on Thursday, prompting sharp reactions from neighbouring countries and raising fresh concerns over security tensions in East Asia.
South Korean and Japanese officials confirmed the missile launch, stating that the projectile travelled a considerable distance before landing in waters outside Japan’s exclusive economic zone.
Pyongyang has continued weapons testing despite repeated international sanctions and diplomatic pressure. North Korean state media later described the launch as part of efforts to strengthen national defence capabilities.
The United States, South Korea, and Japan strongly condemned the missile test and urged North Korea to return to dialogue aimed at reducing tensions on the Korean Peninsula.
Security analysts believe the launch was intended to demonstrate North Korea’s advancing missile technology and send a political message during a period of heightened regional uncertainty.
The missile test triggered emergency monitoring procedures in South Korea and Japan, with authorities temporarily advising residents in some areas to remain alert.
The United Nations Security Council is expected to discuss the latest development amid growing concern over repeated weapons tests by Pyongyang.
Regional experts warn that continued military activity could further complicate diplomatic efforts aimed at denuclearisation and long-term peace in the region.
