SEOUL, Sep 20: North Korea launched an unidentified projectile toward the sea on Sunday, South Korea’s military said, in the latest weapons related activity by Pyongyang.
South Korea’s Joint Chiefs of Staff said the launch took place from North Korea’s east coast. The military did not immediately provide further information about the type of projectile, its range or where it landed.
The latest launch follows a series of weapons tests conducted by North Korea in recent weeks. The activities have continued despite efforts by the United States and South Korea to create conditions for renewed diplomatic engagement with Pyongyang.
Earlier this month, North Korea reported conducting a joint live-fire exercise involving missiles, artillery systems and drones. Pyongyang said the drill demonstrated what it described as “huge destructive power.”
The exercise involved the simultaneous use of several types of weapons, with the North appearing to focus on capabilities that could potentially challenge or overwhelm South Korean and US air defence systems.
The latest projectile launch is expected to draw close attention from Seoul and Washington as they monitor North Korea’s military activities and assess any further developments.
