Srinagar, Oct 23: Chief Minister Omar Abdullah on Thursday paid tributes to former legislators and ministers during obituary references on the first day of the Jammu & Kashmir Assembly’s Autumn Session. He urged the Speaker to adopt a procedure similar to Parliament, focusing on respect rather than speeches.
Speaking in the House, Abdullah stressed that those being remembered contributed to public service, saying, “Nobody among us is an angel. Mistakes are bound to happen either intentionally or unintentionally.” He suggested that obituary references be concise, allowing members to honor leaders without turning it into a platform for political speeches.
Highlighting the work of former J-K Governor Satya Pal Malik, the Chief Minister noted his service as an MLA and minister across various states. “We may have different opinions, but Malik might have taken decisions suited to the time,” he said. Abdullah also praised G.M. Shaheen as a brave leader who, despite surviving a major attack, remained steadfast in his service to the people.
He further requested the Speaker to review the omission of Sultan Panditpuri from the obituary references, underscoring the need for accuracy in paying respects. Abdullah concluded by reflecting on the legacy of all departed leaders, stating, “As we remember them today, tomorrow we will also be remembered. We should try to learn from them.”
