SRINAGAR, Sept 18: National Conference (NC) Vice President Omar Abdullah has urged voters in Jammu and Kashmir to prevent the fragmentation of votes in the upcoming elections, expressing concern over the presence of a significant number of independent candidates, particularly in the Kashmir region. Abdullah cautioned that many of these candidates appear to be contesting with the sole aim of dividing the electorate, which could impact the electoral prospects of the NC-Congress alliance.
“We must be mindful of the large number of independent candidates, especially in Kashmir, as it seems to be an attempt to fragment the vote,” Abdullah said. He emphasized the need for voters to remain vigilant and avoid splitting their ballots, which could inadvertently weaken the alliance’s chances.
The NC leader expressed optimism about the alliance between the National Conference, Congress, and a CPI(M) member, stating that their collective agenda for Jammu and Kashmir’s future had been presented to the electorate. “We are hopeful that voters will support the NC-Congress alliance in this election. However, it is ultimately up to the people to decide,” he noted, adding that the next five years are critical for the region.
Abdullah underscored the importance of these elections, which are being held after a decade. He acknowledged the significant changes in the region over the past 10 years, including the bifurcation of Jammu and Kashmir, the separation of Ladakh, and the transition to Union Territory status. “These elections hold immense significance, particularly in light of the events of August 5, 2019, when Jammu and Kashmir’s special status was revoked. The decisions taken since then have had a profound impact on the region, making this election crucial for its future,” he remarked.
When asked about the potential influence of Prime Minister Narendra Modi’s rally on the elections, Abdullah downplayed its impact in the Kashmir Valley. “There will be no significant effect in Kashmir. It would be notable if the BJP manages to put up a strong fight in even one seat here,” he commented, expressing skepticism about the party’s prospects in the valley.
In response to Union Home Minister Amit Shah’s remarks about the restoration of Article 370, Abdullah asserted that certain issues do not require government approval. “We are aware of the current government, but there is no need for threats. Some matters, like this election, are not within the government’s control. These elections are being held because of a Supreme Court order, not because the government wanted them. If necessary, other issues can also be pursued through the courts,” he explained.
Abdullah’s statements reflect his confidence in the NC-Congress alliance while highlighting the importance of voter unity and the broader political significance of the elections for the future of Jammu and Kashmir.
