Omar Abdullah Raises Concerns Over India–US Trade Deal, Warns of Impact on Agriculture Sector

Warns agriculture sector must boost competitiveness amid potential market opening

Srinagar, Feb 14: Chief Minister Omar Abdullah on Saturday voiced apprehension about the implications of a proposed Indo-US trade agreement, cautioning that the agriculture sector could face challenges if premium American produce gains wider access to Indian markets.

Addressing the SKUAST Gon’gul festival, Abdullah said farmers may struggle to compete unless steps are taken to enhance both productivity and quality standards. He stressed that local growers must be equipped to withstand competition from imported agricultural goods.

Highlighting the importance of preparedness, the Chief Minister underlined the need to modernise farming practices and strengthen research-backed support systems. He noted that the current Budget has prioritised the rural economy, placing agriculture at the forefront of development initiatives.

Abdullah also lauded Sher-e-Kashmir University of Agricultural Sciences and Technology for its pivotal role in advancing innovation, research and farmer outreach in the region.

On regional matters, he emphasised that economic growth is closely tied to stability in neighbouring countries and expressed optimism about improved ties with Bangladesh following credible elections, noting that regional stability serves shared interests.
