Omar Abdullah Says Normalcy in J&K Still Elusive Amid Continued Terror Attacks

J&K Name Change Rumors Baseless, No Such Proposal Exists: Omar Abdullah

Srinagar, 03-01-2025: Chief Minister Omar Abdullah has stated that normalcy in Jammu and Kashmir is still a work in progress, as sporadic terror attacks continue to disrupt the peace. Speaking to reporters in Srinagar, Omar noted that while efforts to establish lasting tranquility are underway, the region cannot yet be considered fully stable. His remarks followed a statement by Union Home Minister Amit Shah, who had asserted that the abrogation of Article 370 ended both terrorism and the ecosystem supporting it in the Valley, while also claiming the provision had instilled separatist tendencies in Kashmiri youth.

Omar refrained from commenting directly on Shah’s remarks but emphasized that reports of attacks persist in certain areas. He suggested the coming days will reveal the trajectory of the peace process.

Addressing rumors of a proposed name change for Jammu and Kashmir to “Kashyap,” Omar dismissed the speculation as unfounded. He clarified that while the Home Minister had highlighted the historical connection of Kashmir to the sage Kashyap, there was no proposal or government consent to rename the region. Media reports suggesting such a move had been corrected, he added.

On the government’s preparedness for the forecasted snowfall, Omar expressed confidence in the administration’s readiness. Drawing from lessons learned during the last snowfall, he assured residents that measures have been taken to minimize disruption. He acknowledged some shortcomings in past responses but pledged improvements for this season.

Regarding electricity supply, Omar observed that while scheduled power cuts continue, the administration is striving to improve the situation. He noted progress compared to previous years and emphasized that any faults in the system are being addressed promptly to ensure stable power for residents during the harsh winter months.
